- Summary: Federal legislation that, among other things, mandated that mental health and addiction treatments are one of the ten Essential Health Benefit categories to be covered by insurance. The Affordable Care Act also allowed children to stay on their parents’ health insurance plans until age 26, which meant that many young people have good insurance plans allowing them to obtain treatment for free or low cost.
