The American Addiction Treatment Association (AATA) is launching regulatory guidance and resources for the states of New York and Illinois to enable members to improve practices, manage risks, and develop effective compliance.

AATA, which launched in September with the regulatory compliance details in four states (California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida) is a national trade organization dedicated to supporting recovery efforts by empowering addiction treatment programs with essential up-to-date compliance resources to our members through training events, detailed content, and resources including state-by-state requirements for licensing and certification, operations, and risk management. Currently in progress, membership will also be available in coming months for Michigan, Georgia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Washington, Colorado, Ohio, New Jersey, and Minnesota. AATA plans to offer content for all 50 states over the next 12-18 months.

"The American Addiction Treatment Association has been adding to its membership and reaching a wider audience in an industry that is constantly experiencing growth. With the sharp increase in the number of addiction treatment programs across the country, the regulations are constantly changing and being updated to accommodate that growth. AATA's job is to keep addiction treatment centers compliant with the new laws," said attorney Harry Nelson, partner at Nelson Hardiman, LLP and founding board chair of AATA. "The AATA offers ongoing educational webinars, seminars, and conferences to keep member facilities informed on critical and often-confusing issues."

The AATA has hosted several training events and provided online resources for industry professionals on relevant regulatory issues.

Expanding the reach to addiction treatment programs, vendor participation has already increased with co-hosting ventures.

"AATA is proud to offer joint-vendor relationships with strategic partners to offer more benefits to members with the addition of Infinity Behavioral Health Services, BioCorRx, and Insurance Offices of America. Infinity is co-hosting a seminar regarding the Intersection of Practice of Medicine and Drug Rehab: Navigating Changing Laws and Regulations on November 17th, 2016 at 1:00pm-4:00pm (PST). We want to educate facilities about their responsibilities under California law so that they can avoid problems and better serve patients in need of care," Nelson said. "Infinity is also co-hosting a critical seminar in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Patient Financial Responsibility. Waiving a patient's financial responsibility is considered fraud. Industry professionals need to know that insurance companies are aggressively going after programs that waive client deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance. Most addiction treatment program operators don't even realize they may be committing fraud."

AATA is offering a schedule of upcoming events available to everyone, while members receive a discounted rate.

"WEBINAR: Urine Drug Testing in Addiction Treatment Medicine" will be held on November 23rd, 2016 at 12:00-12:45pm (PST). Urine drug testing is one of the hot topics in the addiction treatment industry. There are regulatory compliance issues for laboratories, marketers, and addiction treatment programs. How often can you test urine? Will every test be covered by insurance? We will discuss the latest regulations so facilities are compliant in every aspect of urine drug testing.

"WEBINAR: 'Florida Model' in California? The Do's, Don'ts, and the Other" will be held on December 14th, 2016 at 12:00pm (PST). The "Florida Model" of pairing outpatient programs (which are not required to be licensed) with sober living in order to circumvent regulations specific to residential licenses has of late become increasingly popular in California. However, regulators are objecting, stating this practice violates California law.
